World famous in Invercargill: The Grille showcases the best of local cuisine

Pairing delicious, fresh food showcasing the best in Southland cuisine with a quirky retro vibe is the signature of Invercargill café The Grille.

Popular with locals and visitors alike, The Grille is found within Bill Richardson Transport World – conveniently located directly across the road from The Lodges at Transport World – and is the perfect place to grab a drink and a bite to eat before or after exploring the astounding collection of vintage vehicles.

Blending cuisine that harks back to 1960s Americana (beef short ribs or buttermilk fried chicken, anyone?) with fresh, seasonal local ingredients, The Grille has a wonderful atmosphere at any time of the day. Whether you’re dining alone, as a couple, or in a group, the ever-changing menu and excellent service, a visit here is always memorable.

Choose from dishes that celebrate the seafood found in abundance within the icy waters just off the Southland coast, like blue cod, flounder and shellfish, or tempt your tastebuds with freshly-made pasta, seasonal produce, or locally-grown meat and game. The Grille is renowned for decadent hot drinks and delicious brunches, and is also open for dinner from Wednesday – Saturday every week. A large selection of fresh cabinet food daily boasts supremely tasty – and tasty-looking – cakes by the slice as well as local favourite cheese rolls. You can’t spend time in Invercargill without trying this delicacy, affectionately known as ‘southern sushi’ a try, and there’s no better place to sample the simple but show-stopping blend of lightly-toasted bread, oozy cheese, and a little something extra.

(Every cafe in Invercargill has their own secret ingredient to set their cheese rolls apart.)

The Grille has plenty of space and is incredibly family-friendly: all ages will be captivated by the delightfully quirky automotive and retro-themed space, which features cutlery in vintage oyster cans, brightly-coloured petrol bowsers, and even spaces reminiscent of Kiwi family dining and living rooms from a bygone era. A children’s area with plenty of toys and a life-size truck cab will amuse and delight little ones in between bites.
